Alla — the quietest yet most powerful voice of uzbek children’s folklore

In Uzbek oral folklore, there are many loud voices: epics, battle tales, proverbs. Yet among them exists a genre that never speaks loudly. It does not shout, does not make claims, does not step onto a stage. And still, it enters human life as the very first cultural experience. This is alla.
Alla is sung for children, but it does not belong only to them. It is the first spiritual bridge between mother and child, the first affection given through words, the first education set to melody. Perhaps this is why alla has rarely been studied as a separate genre: it seems too natural, too simple. Yet it is precisely this “simplicity” that is its greatest strength.
No one teaches alla. It is not taught at school, not memorized from books. A mother knows it without ever having learned it. This genre has no author, but it has a performer. She is the mother. That is why alla is not written — it is lived.
When we speak of children’s genres, we usually imagine playfulness, joy, and simple verses. Alla does not fit into this image. Though it is a children’s genre, it carries the full weight of the adult world: dreams, anxieties, hopes, prayers, and sometimes silently sung pain. The phrase “Sleep, my child” often hides an inner plea: “May you be at peace,” “May your life be light.”
Another unique quality of alla is that it addresses not the child’s mind, but the soul. The child does not understand the meaning of the words, but feels the melody. Through that melody, the child senses whether the world is safe or not, whether there is love or not. In this sense, alla is the child’s first psychological school.
Today, many products created for children — cartoons, songs, applications — are colorful and noisy. Alla, however, is slow. It moves against time. Perhaps that is why it seems to be gradually retreating in modern life. But in truth, it is not disappearing — it is simply remaining silent. Because alla cannot live in noise.
To preserve alla does not mean to bring it onto the stage or formalize it. To preserve it means to preserve the mother’s voice, to find time to be alone with the child, to put the phone aside and allow space for silence.
Alla is the oldest, purest, and most neglected form of Uzbek children’s folklore. It does not demand articles from us, nor does it wait for research. It asks for only one thing: to be sung. Softly. With love. Every night.

POEMS BY AZİZA:

Life
You’ve changed me,
My eyes like dark coffee.
Youth has risen in me,
And pains have poured heavily.
Why are you so bitter,
Even pepper feels shy?
At times, a sweet prick you are,
Even angels hang their heads high.
Life, tell me, why are you
Never gentle, never plain?
Why push so hard
A girl so pure, so vain?
Life — you’ve changed me,
Taught me how to endure.
Facing betrayal without a smile,
Taught me strength that’s sure.
Giving left to enemies,
Losing friends along the way.
And in the end, you’ve taught me
How to grow and stand someday.

Thank you, life
I no longer look behind,
Nor do I cry remembering the past.
With a light and gentle smile,
I say to you: thank you, life!

I’ve walked through rough and bumpy roads,
At times I laughed, at times felt worn.
But I never gave up on brighter days,
I say to you: thank you, life!

In every fate my Creator has written,
There lies a wisdom, always clear.
Before such destiny, calmly I bow,
I say to you: thank you, life!

My truth
Whenever I write my poems on paper,
The pen is my companion, the paper—my friend.
Alas, they do not know what I feel inside,
Perhaps that’s why the pen tips break.

I tear the paper, hurting its heart,
I squeeze the pen as if it’s to blame.
My mood today is just like the rain,
As if the paper knows I love the rain.

Irretrievable hearts

I’ve left a thousand times, yet still forgave,
But now – no way back, no road to save.
Forgiveness turns bitter, too heavy to give,
When hearts fall for those with no will to live.

There’s still a chance

There comes a time you lose your way,
You dread the night, ignore the day.
Each breath feels heavy, joy seems gone,
You wonder if you still belong.

But hear me now — the time will come,
When darkness fades and light will hum.
A day will rise, so pure, so bright,
And lift you gently toward the light.

I know you feel your dreams are lost,
Forgotten hopes, a painful cost.
Regret may grip you like a chain,
But even storms will pass with rain.

Don’t say “Not now,” don’t ask “But when?”
For life can bloom with joy again.
The day you thought would break you down,
Will one day wear a golden crown.

You, kind in heart and strong in soul,
Your words like balm, your spirit whole.
Though things today may seem unjust,
Your turn will come — believe, and trust.

Yes, patience hurts, I know it well,
Like seeking springs where deserts dwell.
Your tears may speak, your silence scream,
But never lose your precious dream.

Tomorrow waits with open skies,
With grace that lifts and wings that rise.
There’s still a chance, there’s still a way —
Please don’t give up — not now, not today.

Success is near, just past the bend,
And joy is yours, around the end.
The world still needs your voice, your spark —
You are the light within the dark.
